Before your teen can start driving lessons in Louisiana, they’ll need a Temporary Instruction Permit. This step-by-step guide from Magnolia Driving Academy explains exactly how to get your TIP card, what documents to bring, and why it’s required for every new driver in the state.
Your teenager is ready to drive. You feel proud, but there is also that knot in your stomach every time they talk about getting behind the wheel. You want them to be independent and safe at the same time. Then you learn there is paperwork, classes, and something called a Temporary Instruction Permit, and the excitement quickly turns into confusion.
It happens to many families. Parents arrive for their child’s first driver education class only to discover their teen cannot participate because the permit is missing. The disappointment on their face says everything, and the process has to start again from the beginning.
Fortunately, getting a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) in Louisiana is simple once you know the steps. The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) requires every student driver, whether a teen or an adult, to have a TIP before starting any driver education program. Here is how to make sure your family is prepared from the start.
Louisiana introduced the Temporary Instruction Permit on September 4, 2018. This permit authorizes students to take certified driver education courses and to drive with a licensed instructor. Every driving school in the state, including Magnolia Driving Academy, is required to verify that students have a valid TIP before class begins.
Anyone in Louisiana who plans to take driver education must have a TIP. Students may apply once they are at least 14 years old. The permit applies to both teen and adult learners, whether you are registering for a 38-hour teen course or a 14-hour adult course.
Bring only original or certified copies. Photocopies are not accepted (OMV rule).

Visit your nearest OMV office or schedule an appointment online at expresslane.org. Many offices prefer appointments, and lines can grow long before summer and holidays. Planning ahead saves time and stress.
The OMV charges $32.25 for the Temporary Instruction Permit, plus a service fee of up to $6.00, depending on the location (official source). Cash, checks, or credit and debit cards are accepted. You will receive a plastic TIP card. Keep it safe because you will need it for every lesson and driving test.
Louisiana law requires that students carry their TIP during all behind-the-wheel lessons and when taking the road skills test. It confirms that you are legally enrolled in an approved driver education program. If you forget it, your lesson may have to be rescheduled.
